Why We Chose Community Wind Power

People sometimes ask why we chose to focus on a community wind power scheme – rather than solar power, for example, or helping households with insulation. And, after all, everybody knows that winds are not nearly as strong in the east of the country as in the west.

Well, we looked carefully at the options and found there were good reasons to choose a community wind power project:

  • The cost-effectiveness of generating power is greater on a community scale than on a household or business scale
  • Individual households and businesses can still get grants to help them with their own carbon reduction, but the community approach gives us possibilities over and above this
  • The level of grants available to community projects is generally higher than those for individual households and businesses
  • Wind power is much more cost-effective than solar power (photo-voltaic) at this scale
  • Although the wind is stronger in the west of the country, there are turbines designed to operate at low wind speeds which make this a viable project.
  • With a projected life span of 20-25 years, the scheme should provide a predictable income stream, which will enable us to carry out both short term and long term carbon reduction projects
